Couples who want a wedding nobody will forget, on a bluff above the Colorado River.

What stands out

An 1876 territorial prison on a bluff overlooking the Colorado River, and one of the most recognisable landmarks in Arizona. It is an unusual choice and it knows it, but the river views and the stonework give you photographs that exist nowhere else in the state.

What to watch for

It is an Arizona State Park with public opening hours from 8:30am to 4pm, so weddings work in defined windows and usually outside visitor hours. Permits and fees apply and everything comes in from outside.

What couples report

With over three and a half thousand reviews this is by far the most documented site in Yuma, and the feedback is consistently strong about how well preserved and well presented the grounds are. All of it is visitor feedback rather than wedding feedback. For an event, the deciding factors are the river view and the sheer distinctiveness, and the constraint is that a state park sets the schedule.

Recurring complaints

  • State park hours strictly limit event windows
  • Permits and fees apply on top of rental
  • Bring your own for everything
  • A prison setting will not suit every couple
